No. 57, 6th December: On the horizon

This curlew was incredibly well camouflaged against the speckled sand on this beach in Norfolk. Only by crouching down did its shape become discernible against the sky. I had to lie down and press myself as far as I could into the sand to isolate it completely against the blue. I love the simplicity of the shapes and the way the colours and textures in the foreground echo those of the curlew's feathers.


Technical details: Canon 7D MKII + 100-400mm lens with 1.4x extender at 560mm; 1/1000 sec at f/8; ISO 250.
