No. 67, 17th March: Barn owl

This photo is fresh out of the camera! Yesterday evening I was very excited to see a barn owl while out on my walk, but it was unfortunately a little too dark to get any decent shots. When I got back, I noticed that the weather forecast for this morning was looking promising. However, the thought of a lie-in was a little too tempting so I didn't set an alarm - but my body clock chose the barn owls anyway! I woke just before 6am, and a patch of blue sky through my curtains tempted me to head out to the river with my camera. I spotted this barn owl almost as soon as I got there!

They are such beautiful birds to watch. This one landed on a post for a short while, but was spooked by a (very brave!) swimmer getting into the water. It flew past me along the river with soft, graceful wings. I was very pleased to catch a hint of sunlight through its feathers. I think the gold and white and slate-grey of its plumage is perhaps the most beautiful arrangement of colours I've ever seen on a bird.
